The Harmon hinge is a unique pivot hinge design, has quietly transformed how doors are integrated into their spaces, where the aesthetic – laying a door back into a recess, is paramount. Commonly used in high-end cabinetry, concealed doors, and architectural installations, the Harmon Hinge allows a door to swing open and nest flush with adjacent panels, creating a seamless look that enhances the visual and spatial experience of a room. The Harmon Hinge allows the door to swing open and then slide flush with the wall. As the door opens, it pivots and shifts laterally, hiding itself from view when fully open. This unique operation makes it ideal for situations where designers or architects aim to hide or minimize the door’s presence when open.

This hinge requires precise installation and alignment because of its exposed frame section. However, its unique functionality is often worth the added installation detail, especially for premium interiors.

Architectural signage is no longer just about directing people; it’s evolved into an essential element of modern design, blending function with art. The use of colours for architectural hardware transforms everyday urban spaces into vibrant environments. Whether it’s for commercial or public buildings, colour adds aesthetic value and enhances navigation, visibility and occasionally brand identity.

For many years, architectural signage was typically utilitarian. However, the shift toward creating dynamic and engaging spaces has led to more daring design choices. Colour as well as design has become a central feature of modern signage, offering a way to make buildings stand out, create memorable impressions, and even evoke emotions.

The rise of bold colours in signage corresponds to a broader trend in design—embracing individuality and creativity. Urban landscapes, once dominated by muted minimalist tones now have the option to be enlivened with playful colours that capture attention and define spaces.

At R&T we’ve always worked to mitigate our environmental impact, and continue to seek to reduce this footprint, whether this be via our 260kWp solar array covering both factory premises, which has generated 830MWh since installation (Equivilent to 212 tonnes carbon saved); or our newly installed low consumption LED lights, throughout the factory and offices, the drive has always been and remains to reduce our contribution.

Our packaging consumption is at the forefront of the continuous improvement, typically we’ve exceeded standard recycled packaging content, but with new more sustainable material opportunities, we now operate so that all of our cardboard packaging is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable, including water activated paper based tape.

We all often fear change, that’s no different in business. After 100 years of manufacturing bespoke and custom architectural door hardware and pocket door solutions, its natural to deny change. This week the business discussed why change is necessary in business, that “doing what you’ve always done, won’t necessarily deliver innovation and the rewards you aspire too!”.

Having already kicked off Operational Excellence to drive productivity improvements, which will improve the service to our customers, as a business we need to review and seek to refresh our product portfolio and evaluate how we currently go to market, focusing on creating value. 

Change is coming to Royde and Tucker and Portman Pocket Doors, we’ve had a great 100 years, but we do need to look at what we can all do today, to make a brighter future for all. Of course as a business, we shall continue to #OpenPossibilities for our customers, clients, resellers, our employees and of course our shareholders.

After 100 years of UK Manufacturing, you’d think you couldn’t teach on old dog new tricks. Given that we all operate in a global market place, the need to seek continuous improvement has become paramount.

There are many components to Lean Methods, but a great place to start is the production floor. Royde and Tucker utilizes many traditional manufacturing methods associated in the Architectural Hardware space. However, to start the journey of Lean manufacturing, watching how materials flow around the floor is a major 1^st step. Since the middle of July 2024, a select management team have carried out a “Gemba Walk” looking at the working environment, safety, sustainability as well as the movement of materials across the floor. This approach is now repeated on a weekly basis to improve each week, the working environment, material management and flow through our operation.

The goal is to deliver both service, quality and improvements in the workplace environment.

This initiative is part of our Operational Excellence initiative.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Gary Haynes as CEO of Royde & Tucker Ltd. Gary brings extensive experience from multiple industry sectors, having joined the building products sector in 2003.

Gary has held key leadership positions and significantly grown businesses in the UK and internationally across various domains, including Architectural Interior Systems, Commercial Lighting, HVAC, Textile Flooring, and Window Shading Solutions. He began his career as an apprentice electronics engineer in the defence sector, followed by a decade in the automotive industry. Gary’s broad range of experience encompasses manufacturing, product design, sales, business development, M&A, and executive leadership positions.

As of June 2024 we’re very pleased to be able to offer H-series Cerakote as an applied finish to Hardware.

Whilst we’ve historically been able to offer traditional powder coat and wet spray finishes, as well as a plethora of electroplated and patina finishes, Cerakote represents a new range offering and includes some unique key features

On 1st June 2024 Royde & Tucker became 100 years old. An awful lot has changed in this period. For us this has included significant product and brand developments, and several changes in both premises and business ownership. Throughout we’ve maintained our focus on providing unique, high quality products to the built environment, ensuring doors look great and work well for years to come – another 100 Years at least!

Chapter Three – Exciting Times Ahead

Just a week short of our 97^th birthday Royde & Tucker Limited is excited to announce the start of a new chapter for the business as we approach our 1^st century!

We remain one of the UKs leading independent designer and manufacturer of high performance architectural hardware and the future is bright as we enter a partnership with new investors to take us into the next chapter of this adventure.

After penning chapter one, George Murgitroyd and Richard Tucker handed the baton over to Steve Jenkins and Nick Gadsby, in the early 1970s, to deliver chapter two.

Now, after 48 years with the business, Steve and Nick are taking the opportunity to deservedly sit back and relax as they move on from R&T business. Jon Simms and Simon Gardiner remain at the helm, as Managing Director and Marketing & Sales Director respectively.  Jon and Simon have combined experience of 36 years with R&T now to guide us into this next phase – it sounds a lot until you compare it with Steve and Nick’s 96 years!

Jon and Simon were supported in the acquisition from Steve and Nick by Perscitus and Peter Toland.  Adrian Field and Charles Shortland from Perscitus will join the Board together with Peter Toland who joins as Non-Executive Chairman.  Perscitus and Peter look forward to assisting the Royde & Tucker team in pursuing its growth strategy, both in the UK and internationally.

We’re very pleased to be able to offer a clear polyester powder coat finish containing BioCote antibacterial technology, certificated for antibacterial efficacy to ISO 22196:2011.

As the final coating is a clear PPC, not only is it robust, but we are able to offer this as a final lacquer on most of our existing standard finishes, providing a wide range of colour/patina options.

Hinge finials – not going to win a red dot prize for design inventiveness but these tiny balls “beading” we’re really excited about, at least I am…..such detail and in polished nickel finish….consider yourselves blessed

Increasingly Black is appearing in specifications and from a manufacturing perspective raises some challenges. Historically a plain RAL has often been used to fulfill the need; this finish is typically unsatisfactory on close inspection. Here we have FMB (flat matt black) which whilst still offering the robustness of a powdercoat has a much improved flatness, consistency and very soft lustre.
